April 2017 – Resilience: showing strength in the face of adversity conference

University of Salford resilience showing strength in the face of adversity The University of Salford Midwifery Society has announced the 4th annual student-led conference, ‘Resilience: showing strength in the face of adversity’ focusing on the theme of resilience.

The ‘Resilience: showing strength in the face of adversity’ conference will be highlighting the challenges maternity services are facing from cost-cutting measures to meeting high demand.

There will also be an opportunity to learn ways of coping with challenges, as well as celebrating the achievements of midwifery professionals.

The day will be led by Practising Midwife Sheena Byrom OBE, with presentations from Professor Mavis Kirkham, Dr Jacque Gerrard, Professor Billie Hunter, Sascha Wells, Sally Pezaro and One to One Midwives.

UCLH Maternity services would like to invite you to an exciting conference to raise awareness of the need for dignity and respect during birth. This free conference will bring together leading experts in the field to discuss the fundamentals to compassionate, kind and respectful maternity care. The focus of the day is to encourage engagement and discussion to transform the experience of women and staff in modern day maternity services

We have invited superb speakers in the field including:

  • Professor Jackie Dunkley-Bent – Head of midwifery at NHS England
  • Sheena Byrom OBE – Freelance midwifery consultant –Jointly edited the  ‘Roar behind the silence: why kindness, compassion and respect matter in maternity care’
  • Indie Kaur – Consultant midwife at Barts Health NHS Trust & Pavan Amara – Founder of My body back project: offers advice to women who have experienced sexual assault– started the first ‘My body back maternity clinic’ at Royal London Hospital.
  • Jacque Gerrard –Director Royal College of Midwives England.
  • Midwife Jane Pollock- award winner from the Iolanthe Midwifery trust – ‘Caring for the Carers’
  • Sally Pezaro – Midwife and Clinical Research Fellow – HealthyStaff4HealthyPatients
  • You will also hear from women who will share stories of their maternity experiences.

Caring for the wellbeing of staff will also form a significant part of the day. You will learn about the challenges on the well being of staff and acquire skills for self compassion and resilience.

Meeting, sharing knowledge and hearing from renowned speakers will enable this full day conference to provide an inspirational and uplifting experience for every delegate. It is also an excellent opportunity to gain CPD for revalidation.

Maximising your academic potential via social media

All Coventry University academics and research students are invited to a free talk organised by the Research Excellence Unit as part of the wider research impact agenda.

This symposium will explore how researchers and academics can maximise their academic potential and impact via social media. The session will focus on building your online presence, how social media can be used for research purposes and engaging with the right social media communities. Topics will be focused around the use of Linkedin, Twitter, Altmetrics and Facebook. We will be learning by doing! So please bring along your mobile devices.

The session will be led by Sally Pezaro, a PhD researcher and Social Media Ninja. Sally is currently working with NHS England, Dr Wendy Clyne and Dr Rosie Kneafsey as they look to define what #ShowsWorkplaceCompassion for health care staff via Twitter.

Improving staff experience to improve performance

This session will be run in conjunction with colleagues from Coventry University and Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, and will focus on the impact staff engagement and experience has on organisational performance, specifically patient experience. The session is aimed at commissioners and policy makers, and will outline why staff experience is so important, as well as offer examples from an organisation has has improved staff experience to great effect.
